A place and its people
Our Chekhov story.
Chekhov and Melikhovo
In 1890, Anton Chekhov set out for Sakhalin. The journey, his work on the island and the return home took almost eight months. He saw human lives behind official records, and the experience became the basis of his book Sakhalin Island.
Two years later, Chekhov settled in Melikhovo, near Lopasnya, now the town of Chekhov. Here he treated patients, built schools, planted a garden and wrote The Seagull. That attention to people and to everyday life still resonates with us.
From bread and preserves to chocolate
In 1944, the district food production enterprise began operating in Lopasnya. It baked bread and spice cakes, made preserves and canned foods, and prepared soaked apples. In 1959, it was renamed the town food production enterprise.
In 1969, it became the Chekhov Confectionery Factory, specialising in sweets and confectionery ingredients. It produced Korovka milk sweets, each wrapped by hand. In 1977, a mechanised line began making Zolotoy Telyonok and Luzhok. Batonchiki, Iris, Zorenka and Chekhovskaya Korovushka followed.
The factory’s main work became making chocolate and cocoa-based filling masses for other confectionery manufacturers. Technologists and specialists from many well-known Soviet factories came here to learn. Today, we continue this work and develop Чеховская Коллекция. Experience is still passed from person to person.
